Solana airdrops and taxes: income, basis, and spam tokens

Software, not tax, legal or investment advice. Estimates may be wrong. Verify with a tax professional.

An incoming token balance needs an explanation before it becomes an income entry. This US federal guide is for individuals reviewing Solana receipts in 2026, including 2025 filing records. A distribution's marketing label does not decide its tax treatment, its value, or when the recipient obtained control.

Separate the receipt from any later disposition. Your review should identify why the tokens arrived, what you could do with them, and the evidence supporting their dollar value. Keep uncertain receipts visible rather than assigning every incoming token the same tax category.

What the hard-fork ruling actually covers

Revenue Ruling 2019-24 considers a hard fork without receipt of new cryptocurrency and a hard fork followed by an airdrop. In the latter situation, receipt with dominion and control creates ordinary income measured at fair market value. The basis of the received property reflects the income included. A fork without receipt does not create income under the ruling's facts.

The ruling discusses control through the ability to transfer or otherwise dispose of the cryptocurrency. A ledger entry can precede receipt where the taxpayer cannot exercise that control. Conversely, the discussion recognizes constructive receipt, so the first time you notice a balance is not automatically the tax receipt time.

This ruling does not decide every promotional Solana distribution, claim campaign, or unsolicited token. We have not verified a universal IRS ruling that classifies all such receipts. Ask a tax professional how the general rules apply to the particular distribution.

Promotional rewards need their own facts

26 USC 61 broadly defines gross income, subject to statutory exclusions. An absence of payment by the recipient is not enough to establish that a token receipt is excluded. Equally, calling a distribution a gift does not establish that it qualifies for gift treatment.

Prepare a short description of the activity behind each receipt. Was it compensation for work, a reward tied to prior activity, or an unsolicited transfer with no known relationship? Save the distribution terms that were available at the time. A later announcement may describe a different version of the program.

For digital assets received for services, IRS Notice 2014-21 addresses income and basis measured in dollars at receipt. If work was involved, preserve the invoice or agreement and explain whether it was performed as part of a business. Ask your preparer to determine the appropriate income reporting route rather than putting all receipts on a capital-gains form.

Staking rewards are not the same fact pattern

Revenue Ruling 2023-14 addresses a cash-method taxpayer receiving proof-of-stake validation rewards. It requires inclusion at fair market value when dominion and control arise and also addresses staking through an exchange in the described circumstances.

Use that ruling for the reward activity it describes, rather than treating it as a decision about every token distributed to people who previously staked. Keep validation rewards and separate promotional distributions in different review groups. That makes it possible to apply the relevant authority without assuming the programs have identical terms.

Record control and valuation separately

A practical receipt worksheet can include these fields:

FieldEvidence to preserve
Token identityMint address and readable name
QuantityLedger record and original precision
AvailabilityRestrictions and when they changed
Receipt timingTimestamp, time zone, and supporting facts
Dollar valuePrice source, method, and limitations
ClassificationProfessional conclusion or unresolved question

A quoted price is evidence to evaluate, not an automatic valuation of the entire balance. Document missing markets, transfer restrictions, and inconsistent price sources. Do not treat a missing quote as a verified zero or use a later price merely because it is easier to retrieve.

Claimable but unclaimed allocations require particular care. Save the eligibility and claim terms and ask about actual or constructive receipt. This guide cannot establish that delaying a claim delays income. It also cannot establish that every eligibility announcement is a receipt.

An income entry and a later capital calculation

Assume a tax professional concludes that Jamie received 1,000 tokens as ordinary income worth $150, with $150 basis. Jamie later disposes of that entire lot for $210. Assume capital-asset treatment for the later disposition and ignore fees.

The records contain $150 of receipt income and a separate $60 capital gain. If instead the later proceeds were $90, the capital calculation would be a $60 loss, subject to applicable limitations. That later result does not replace the original receipt entry with the final proceeds amount.

Link the disposition to the receipt lot. When a software import gives the received tokens zero basis merely because no cash acquisition appears, preserve the income valuation evidence and flag the mismatch for correction. The example assumes the receipt classification has already been resolved; it does not resolve a promotional airdrop by analogy alone.

Spam tokens should remain reviewable

We could not verify an IRS blanket exclusion for everything a wallet labels spam, or an IRS rule requiring an arbitrary positive value for every unsolicited token. Preserve the incoming record, available control evidence, and valuation uncertainty. A display filter does not itself document what happened for tax purposes.

Ask a tax professional to distinguish a genuinely valueless receipt from an unknown value and to assess whether income was realized. Record the conclusion and its basis in a review note. Avoid silently deleting events that may explain later balance changes.

The IRS digital assets overview explains reporting and recordkeeping obligations. Use the 2025 Form 8949 instructions for later capital dispositions where applicable, while keeping ordinary receipt income separately identified. Missing broker paperwork should prompt reconciliation, not an assumption that the receipt or disposition can be omitted.
