How to calculate profit and loss for a Solana wallet
Software, not tax, legal or investment advice. Estimates may be wrong. Verify with a tax professional.
This guide is for US federal reporting, especially 2025 returns filed in 2026 and records for tax year 2026. It assumes tokens held as capital assets. A wallet's change in dollar value is not automatically its taxable profit: deposits, withdrawals, receipts of income, and unsold holdings all affect the display.
Start with three separate outputs: realized gains and losses, unsold holdings with remaining basis, and unresolved events. Keep income receipts in a separate ledger as well. Combining them into one performance number makes it hard to see which transactions support a return.
Gather the history before calculating
Collect every wallet and custodial account needed to explain the assets in the wallet being reviewed. Include older acquisitions when those units were disposed of during the tax year. A January opening balance tells you quantity, but not necessarily cost or holding period.
For each event, retain the signature or account reference, timestamp, mint address, quantities, and fee details. Keep the original export. Make corrections in a working copy with notes explaining what changed and which evidence supports the change.
Do not identify tokens solely by ticker. Preserve the mint address beside the display name so that later price lookups and reconciliations use the same asset. Also record the precision used for each quantity; premature rounding can make a small position appear fully disposed of.
Classify what actually happened
Separate acquisitions, dispositions, income receipts, owned-wallet transfers, and unresolved events. A routed swap may contain several instructions. Those instructions need interpretation before they become tax rows; counting every internal movement as a separate customer trade can distort the result.
The IRS virtual currency FAQs explain that moving virtual currency between your own wallets is generally not a taxable event. Preserve the original lot information across the movement. Fees paid with assets and unusual wrapping, bridging, or liquidity transactions need separate review; do not infer their treatment solely from a wallet label.
For each uncertain event, write a plain description such as “asset left wallet; destination ownership unconfirmed.” That is more useful than silently choosing a tax category just to make the reconciliation finish.
Assign dollar values consistently
IRS Notice 2014-21 requires dollar reporting. Use evidence tied to the event's date and time, and retain the source and method. A current quote cannot reconstruct a historical swap by itself.
For a thinly traded token, compare the recorded consideration with the price source before accepting a number. The valuation rules in 26 CFR 1.1001-7 permit reference to outgoing assets when received property cannot be valued with reasonable accuracy. That still requires reliable evidence; it is not permission to invent a price.
A missing quote should remain an explicit warning. If a reviewer later supplies a supported value, retain the original gap and the correction note so the final figure can be reproduced.
Worked FIFO example
Assume one wallet holds two lots of the same token. The first is 100 units with $100 total basis. The second is 100 units with $180 total basis. A later disposition transfers 150 units for a $240 amount realized. Assume FIFO applies and ignore fees.
| Lot consumed | Units | Basis used |
|---|---|---|
| First acquired | 100 | $100 |
| Second acquired | 50 | $90 |
| Total | 150 | $190 |
The realized gain is $240 minus $190, or $50. The remaining 50 units retain $90 basis. If those remaining units are currently valued at $70, their $20 unrealized decline is a separate display figure, not another completed disposition in this example.
The wallet/account identification rules in 26 CFR 1.1012-1 apply from 2025. Specific identification requires timely records; otherwise earliest-acquired ordering generally applies within the relevant wallet or account. Do not pool every wallet into an unsupported global FIFO calculation. Moving units does not reset their original acquisition date.
For 2026 custodial activity, verify broker identification requirements rather than assuming the temporary 2025 recordkeeping relief continues. FAQs 84–88 in the IRS digital asset FAQs distinguish these periods. A method chosen in software after the transaction cannot by itself establish timely identification.
Treat fees according to the transaction
For a cash acquisition, a $200 price plus a qualifying $4 cash acquisition fee produces $204 basis. Crypto swaps require a different allocation: transaction costs generally reduce the disposed asset side instead of increasing the acquired token's basis. Assets used for fees are themselves dispositions. See the current FAQs and regulations linked above.
Keep gross quantities and net quantities separate. When the source already reports a net amount, do not subtract the same fee again. Classify transfer charges, refundable deposits, and failed-transaction costs separately for review instead of applying a universal fee formula.
A useful calculation log shows the input rows, selected lots, fee treatment, dollar valuation, and final amount. Someone reviewing a suspicious result should be able to trace it without rerunning an entire wallet import.
Reconcile quantities and information returns
For each mint, opening units plus incoming units minus outgoing units should match closing units, after resolving the nature of each movement. Investigate gaps before accepting totals. Then compare wallet dispositions with broker statements and remove duplicate representations of the same event.
The 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions distinguish covered and noncovered digital assets for 2026. A transferred-in asset may lack broker-reported basis even when your own acquisition evidence is complete. Preserve both the broker's statement and your supported calculation.
Prepare the review package
Export transaction detail, lot balances, valuation evidence, and unresolved items together. Separate short-term and long-term dispositions, then review the 2025 Form 8949 instructions for reporting categories and required adjustments. Keep the performance view labeled separately from the tax working papers.
A reproducible calculation is more useful than an unexplained precise-looking total. Ask a tax professional to resolve ambiguous income, token-loss claims, and complex protocol events before treating the report as ready for filing.
